The ancient mediterranean cultures were patriarchal.
From this starting point, Aristotle (384-322 BC) and other Greek philosophers constructed a theory that tried to explain male superiority.
The Christian early writers (200-900 AD) adopted this theory. Medieval theologians (1000-1600 AD) developed all the implications of this presumed piece of 'Christian doctrine'.
The results still haunt the Catholic Church today.
We present the evolution of the doctrine in five diagrams.
